Grant Guidelines
The Wylie Bulldogs Education Foundation was able to award $7,775.11 to Wylie teachers in only its first year of existence in addition to $12,000 in scholarships that were announced in May of 2011.
That’s almost $20,000 to students and teachers thanks to a hugely successful first year of fund-raising. The teachers had to apply for the grants, outlining specifically what they wanted the money for and how they planned to use their purchases in the classroom. A panel chose the recipients based on the request. Judges did not have any names connected to the requests. The teachers were very grateful to receive the money and have a variety of plans for its use.
Here’s a look at the teachers who received grants from the Wylie Bulldogs Education Foundation and how they plan to use their money.
I Can Touch The Sky
Twelve Wylie teachers joined forces to request $3,567.60 to buy six iPads that each teaching team will share. The teachers are Angela Aycock and Jennie Ramos; Kimberly McGuire and a new 1st Grade teacher; Sandy Low and Tresa Tutt; Lenda Jensen and a new teacher; Sheila Hilburn and Heather Ake; and Amy Brazell and Keri Terbush.
The teachers said they will use the iPads for progress testing. Right now, all 12 teachers share one iPad which makes it very difficult for students to do their testing. “We are going to use them to help monitor their progress and to work with them on an individual basis,” Mrs. Ake said. Mrs. Ramos said the increased number of iPads will certainly make the testing smoother. “With fewer kids on one iPad, we won’t have as many glitches,” she said. The iPads also can be used for fun activities and as a reward for students who complete their assignments.
Butterfly Gardens
Wylie teachers Mary Powell and Kim Hudson were awarded $733.56, which they intend to use to help build butterfly gardens in Gloyna Memorial Garden.
The teachers will use the money for subscriptions to three different Science magazines – National Geographic Young Explorer, Weekly Reader for Kindergarten and Science Spin.
They also will buy butterfly & ladybug larvae and a plant time-delay camera.
They told their classes that the foundation’s gift would allow them to have their own butterfly garden. Plus, the plant camera will actually allow the students to watch the plant grow.
DI Equipment
Wylie’s Destination Imagination director Kim Cheek was awarded $500 to buy sewing machines and power tools. Cheek said DI students frequently need a particular type of electric saw, and the grant will allow her to purchase one. “I’m excited,” she said. “We always have to borrow this saw. We also are going to buy some safety equipment.” Cheek said she plans to hold a workshop to teach DI students how to safely use the equipment.
Taking Care of Business and Language & Literacy Development
Wylie Elementary Teacher Susan Langford received a grant for $912.95 to buy two netbook computers and three Kindle E-Readers and five headphones.
iPad Technology for Language Acquisition and Education Enrichment
Wylie Early Childhood Center teacher April Brannan was awarded $867 to buy an iPad and software that will allow her to better teach language-challenged children. Brannan requested the grant on behalf of herself and her fellow teachers Stephanie Scott, Kristin Hyland, Karissa Sanchez, Amy Reister, Diana Witherspoon, Lisa Mayes and Emily McMillan.
They will get a 32GB iPad 2; iTunes gift cards, a smartcover and an iPad camera connection kit.
“There are a lot of good communication apps,” Brannon said. “We have a lot of special ed kids who have trouble communicating. We are going to use it to facilitate their communication.”
The Amazing Elmo TT-02 Rx Camera
Wylie art teacher Kina Tiemann was awarded $599 to buy an Elmo TT-02RX Camera. “What I can do with it is amazing,” she said. “The kids can watch my demonstrations live on the SMART Board.. It’s amazing. Thank you so much.”
Percussion Line
Wylie High School Drumline Director Chris Brannan was awarded $1,000 to buy headphones and other protective equipment designed to help protect drummers’ hearing. In addition, the West Texas Rehab Center is going to work with Brannan on the project to study the effects of noise on hearing.
Flip Video Cameras
Wylie High School teacher Jackie Powell was awarded $595 to buy five Flip Video Cameras at $119 each. The Flip Video cameras will allow the students to do video projects and will help enrich the high school’s Digital Technology Class.
